Boston University Information Session 

Boston University will host a reception in Philadelphia for high school juniors and seniors and their families. This is a wonderful opportunity for your students to learn more about BU and the college application process. The presentation will take place at William Penn Charter School on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 2:00 PM, but families should arrive approximately 30 minutes before check-in. The Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University will host its Fall Scholars Day Open House on Friday, September 27. This is an opportunity for prospective students and their families to learn more about the Schreyer Honors College and Penn State through current student panels and presentations by deans and the Admissions staff. University of Pennsylvania GEARS Day

On Monday January 20th, GEARS Day will be held at the University of Pennsylvania. GEARS Day is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania’s Society of Women Engineers (SWE). SWE is a

national non-profit organization that aims to advocate and increase opportunities for women in engineering and technology fields.

GEARS Day is a day-long, no-cost camp intended to educate high school girls about engineering professions. The event is on Penn’s campus. Attendees will participate in hands-on workshops focusing on various engineering disciplines including bioengineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science. They will also get a chance to hear from and speak with engineering professors and college students.

Volunteer Opportunities at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, PA.

 Elmwood Park Zoo hosts events called Harvest Fest, Boo at the Zoo, and Wild Lights starting in September and running through the beginning of January. If you would like to volunteer at one of these events follow this link https://www.elmwoodparkzoo.org/volunteer-form/

You will be responsible for helping guests with crafts, educational games, handing out prizes, assisting with photo opportunities, and various other things. The Teen Education Volunteer Program is full for the remainder of 2019, but the application process for 2020 starts in January.

Gannon University HACKATHON


Gannon University welcomes you to participate in our Hackathon series of online to on-site cybersecurity challenges. These events give participants experience in designing a secure a machine, as well as integrating solutions to protect systems from the sort of attacks found in the real world. The competition involves multiple categories of problems, each of which contains a variety of questions of different point values and difficulties.

Registration below is for the virtual Hackathon events. You may only register and participate in one of the two events.

Participation in the virtual events will serve as a gateway for qualifying finishers to be invited to compete in an on-campus Hackathon on February 16. Competitors will have the chance to win prizes* including

  • Grand prize of one full-tuition scholarship to Gannon University for high school seniors.

  • $1,500 scholarship increase to existing Admissions Merit Award for high school seniors.

  • One prize of FREE admission and multiple prizes of discounted admission to a summer camp session featuring iOT, cyber systems and technology for high school juniors.

  • Who: Competitors must be current juniors and seniors in high school.

  • First time competing? No problem! This competition is designed for students of all cybersecurity skill levels. Competitors will receive instructions at the start of the Hackathon to guide you through challenges of varying difficulty. Students will be given clues to solve tasks tailored to both first-time gamers and experienced competitors.

  • Cost: Free

    *Prizes: High school juniors are eligible to win only the prizes toward admission to the Gannon summer camp. To be eligible for scholarship awards from this competition, students must be a senior invited to the on-campus Hackathon who is accepted to Gannon University and expected to enroll in cyber engineering, cybersecurity or a related engineering and computer science field. Only one participant will receive a full-tuition scholarship. All seniors who are invited to the on-campus Hackathon and choose to participate in the competition will have their Admissions Merit award increased by $1,500. Details of the scholarship awards are included with students’ acceptance letters.

PFEW: Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week 2020

What is it?: A week-long opportunity to develop critical leadership skills, communication skills, and teamwork skills. This is a unique and challenging program that provides a hands-on opportunity to learn about the free enterprise system. It opens doors for high school sophomores and juniors to learn what it takes to succeed in the fast paced world of free enterprise.

Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Program

The Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange Program is jointly funded by the US Congress and German Bundestag to give graduating high school seniors the ability to live in Germany for a year. Students will live with a host family while participating in school or other training programs, and getting a hands-on work experience through internships with German companies.
